The Doctrine of Signatures with Craig Jorden-Baker, 4 and 5 July 2025

Vetch

New date added, now on 4 and 5 July 2025. Dr Craig Jorden-Baker will be hosting an evening exploring the strange and ancient European belief known as ‘The Doctrine of Signatures’. The Doctrine held that plants gave outward ‘signs’ of their uses to humankind. By its logic, the kidney-shaped fruits of the kidney vetch could cure kidney problems and the flower eyebright was thought to restore vision. Now largely supplanted by modern botany and medicine, the Doctrine of Signatures nevertheless can still tell us much about plant names, history and our relationship with the natural world.

This evening event will be a mixture of a fun and interactive lecture, supported by music from local folk singer Jo Burke, who has a wealth of songs about some of the plants and ideas we’ll encounter. We’ll then be finishing the evening off with some home-made food and drink, and a more informal space where we can chat and enjoy each other’s company at my home-pub, The Common Bond. For several years now, I’ve had the utter pleasure of working with BHOGG to deliver foraging events across the city in places like Wild Park, Preston Park and Whitehawk Community Food Project. These have been incredibly popular and I hope this new event will prove popular with the lovely people of BHOGG. Really look forward to welcoming you!
